Landowners Extend Heybrook Purchase Deadline
Landowners Extend Heybrook Purchase Deadline
Celebration Rally in Index, June 21
With a June 30 deadline looming large, the Friends of Heybrook Ridge have been steadily raising the $1.3 million to purchase 133 acres of mature forest and protect it from imminent clear-cut. Supportive owners, W.B. Foresters, Inc. have now extended that deadline to July 31.
A celebration and donation rally, “Hands Across Index” will be held in Index from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21. (See attached flyer.) Music, food, and camaraderie will prevail, and at 5:30 p.m. everyone will line the main street in town, holding hands and carrying a sign large enough to be seen from a photographer’s look-out point on the
“Index is small and we need help from climbers, hikers, kayakers, artists, — anyone who comes here to recreate. We urge all who care about this incredible part of the world to respond generously to our $500,000 challenge grant and come to the party in Index on June 21,” said event coordinator and board member Nicho Dankers. He added that the Friends of Heybrook Ridge are working closely with the Cascade Land Conservancy to make their vision come true of a new forest park as the “Gateway to the Wild Sky Wilderness.” (Contact us if you want to participate as volunteer — we’ll need help with set-up and clean-up.)
Historic photo to be taken …
You can be in an historic photo that will be taken from Lookout Point, about 1,000 ft. up on the Index Town Wall (the granite cliff which provides the backdrop for the town). Be sure to be at the park by at least 5:00 p.m. so that you can be part of the hand-holding line of people down the main street. There will be 14 huge single-letter signs spelling out “WE LOVE HEYBROOK” carried by 28 of the 100s of people we expect in the line-up. The photo will be taken at 5:30 p.m. — don’t miss this chance to be part of history. We expect plenty of media attention!
Friends of Heybrook T-shirts will be available for sale …
We have them in all sizes for $20 each– wear one for the photo!
We will also be giving out free “May the Forest Be With You” bumper stickers -
don’t miss out!
Many people have been wondering — can they make it? Our answer is yes! The deadline extension until July 31 makes it realistic. We have nearly $600,000 now in the bank and some large donations and pledges to be redeemed soon. We just need YOU to put us over the top!
Please consider sending us your IRS “Economic Stimulus” rebate! That’s an easy way to donate, and remember, it will be matched dollar for dollar by our anonymous donor. Another way to make not only a double, but triple donation is through your employer if the business maintains a charitable giving matching program. Example: One donor sent in $1,000 recently that was then matched by our anonymous donor’s $500,000 matching grant and then again by Bank of America, the donor’s employer. Her $1,000 gave us $3,000! Even if all you can manage is $100 right now, when matched, those dollars really add up.
Some people said it would take a miracle for a brand new small group like Friends of Heybrook Ridge to raise $1.3 million in a year. Well, it’s happening and it’s no miracle — it’s many, many people showing they care about our vision of saving a forest and offering it to the public as an educational and recreation trail system. Our success is also because of plain hard work and choosing a powerful partner, the Cascade Land Conservancy. You are part of this success because of your support in the past year. Now it’s time to prove what broad community support can really accomplish — please give as generously as possible!
Thank you, on behalf of all of the people who love the forests surrounding Index.
